Ernest Beaux was a French perfumer of Russian origin who worked in pre-revolutionary Russia (at the Rallet company) before emigrating to France. In 1921, commissioned by Coco Chanel, he created Chanel No.5 — the first fragrance built on a bold overdose of aldehydes, and a 20th-century legend. His other Chanel work includes Cuir de Russie and Bois des Îles.
